5.2. Learning tasks

a) Translation and analysis of elegiac texts (Tibullus, Propertius or Ovid) and lyrics (Horace) in class.

 b) Translation of a book by Tibullus, Propertius or Ovid by the student.

5.3. Syllabus

1. The genres of the lyric and the elegy in Rome: concept and study methods.

2. The neoteric movement and its forerunners. The poetry of Catullus.

3. The lyric of the Augustan period: Horace.

4. The Latin elegy: origins and development.  The elegies of the Augustan period: Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid (elegiac).

5. The high imperial lyric: Statius.

6. Lyric and elegy of the late period.
